TEXAS, TX

In late January I had to go to the ER for inflammation of my right hip. The inflammation had been going on all that month but for that late morning in January it hit so hard I could not stand it. As bad as childbirth pains and I should know. Two months later the inflammation is not so severe. I finally got the MRI and it shows edema about the lateral aspects of the greater tuberosity right hip. Now - the discomfort is in my left shoulder, and I get jabs of tingling and all out numbness down… read more

How can you manage inflammation that moves between different joints with spondylitis?

It sounds like you're experiencing the frustrating reality of how spondylitis can affect different areas of your body. The severe hip inflammation you experienced, along with the edema shown on your MRI, is a common manifestation of this condition.

Why symptoms "jump around":

Spondylitis doesn't just affect the spine and hips. Inflammation can cause pain in other joints including:
* Shoulders
* Ankles
* Small joints of the hands or feet
* Buttocks (sacroiliac joints)

The tingling and numbness you're experiencing down to your left elbow could be related to inflammation affecting tendons or nerves in that area.

Your dietary changes are a positive step. Being mindful of sugar and gluten intake can help some people manage chronic inflammation, though individual responses vary.

Important points for your rheumatology appointment:

Bring up the severity of your hip inflammation, the MRI findings showing edema, and your new shoulder symptoms with tingling and numbness. These details will help your rheumatologist assess disease activity and determine if your current treatment plan needs adjustment.

Treatment options might include NSAIDs for inflammation, or if those aren't controlling symptoms adequately, disease-modifying medications or biologics to help prevent progression and reduce inflammation throughout your body.

I agree. We're the same age. I looked back at your story too. All very familiar and then some. Unfortunately, unless your Rheumatologist is also a functional medicine practitioner you wont likely get anything more than a prescription for Biologics made with Chinese Hamster Ovaries (look it up) or baseline chemotherapy like Methotrexate. Ugh. Keeps them in business I suppose. Go ahead, give conventional medicine a try. When you're fed up with increasingly horrifying and even crippling symptoms and side affects, do your homework on the functional medicine approach. At the very least, if you're dyed in the wool on Rheumis, look up Dr Micah Yu, a Rheumatologist AND certified FM practitioner with loads of free podcasts and YouTube interviews on REAL healing. Or you can save yourself years of time and trouble and peruse my wall of posts over the past few years.😉
Sure, scary stuff, but i am down to a med free pain level of 1-2 this week and just returned from a 3.5 mile unassisted walk, a far cry from feeling like i am in hard labor again with a giant headed baby. Been there too😖. What doesn't kill you can make you better in ways you never could have dreamt of had it not been for that awful thing you triumphed over and danced again afterwards. Yours in better health P ☺️ 🙏
