Members discussing bloating and swelling during flares shared that gut issues are a common and often overlooked part of living with AS, with several connecting their symptoms to related conditions like IBS, celiac disease, and colon slowdowns. Practical tips included chewing simethicone tablets for gas relief, taking daily Benefiber for digestive comfort, and exploring aquatic therapy for swelling and inflammation. A recurring theme was the importance of seeing specialists, doing your own research, and sharing what works so the whole community can benefit.

When I "caught" Ankylosing Spondylitis, I was bloated and puking all the time. After months of testing I was diagnosed with celiac's disease (gluten/wheat intolerance). Autoimmune diseases usually come, at least, in pairs. I have dealt with these for 17 years. Started having gut issues (bloating/aching) and my gastro Dr. told me to take Benefiber daily. My stomach has not felt this good in ages. I take the "red can" of benefiber with super fruits and life is a bit better. At least now as I progress with other issues due to AS, at least my stomach likes me again, and I'll take that as a win. Good luck in your journey and have a blessed day.

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member - scrolling through responses I saw where you and Lola2 were talking about Edema and foot issues. My feet were swelling, turning a light blue in the morning and lots of purple "spider veins" appearing around my ankles. I had a leg vein ultra sound and there were the usual old man issues with circulation and I needed compression socks, elevate and we'll discuss meds. Since I'm a firm denier on most meds after 3 nasty reactions from biologics I did my research on circulation, swelling. I kept coming up with a certain brand of "beetroot". I've been on the supplement just under 2 weeks and the discoloration is gone, most of the purple veins have gone and I haven't worn compression socks this past few days now. I'm not touting this or on the bandwagon yet, but for me there is a noticeable difference without meds. And it helps with plaque build up in the veins and arteries by opening up the veins (relaxes them) and allows more blood flow. I'm happy with the results so far and I'll keep the site posted on non-medicine for a fix. Its called "Rosabella Beetroot" and I take 2-1300 mg pills a day. Its advertised as an old Amish beet that hasn't genetically been mutated out into a sugar beet. Its not that expensive, but for me it's working so far and I'm surprised by the results. @A MySpondylitisTeam Member has got me doing more research in my spare time and this is where I am now. Just food for thought, not promoting anything, just throwing it out for anyone who's got issues and time for self research...and no more medicines. Have a blessed day and a wonderful journey.
