@A MySpondylitisTeam Member. The difference between Functional Medicine drs and conventional medicine drs is that functional medicine drs utilize much more extensive in depth biological testing...blood, fecal, urine, sometimes even hair.... to find out the different CAUSES of disease symptoms. Conventional drs focus on symptom relief pertinent to their specialty. They look at their specialty, or if they are a prinary care dr, they refer the patient to a specialist for that one primary symptom to control. The symptom is the focus and how to stop the experience of that symptom. The CAUSE is not the primary focus. The goal of a functional dr is to determine the cause and guide the patient to stop the cause. For example, parasites in the gut microbiome that inhibit the ability of the body to absorb nutrients is a common cause of autoimmune conditions. A conventional dr might prescribe a proton pump inhibitor to treat occasional digestive discomfort like heartburn and a prescription Nsaid or steroid or opioid for autoimmune related pain. They do not look for what is causing the pain. Consider Painguy, he did his own digging for a miracle cure. By way of recent covid treating publications he stumbled upon Ivermectin and decided to risk trying it to treat his condition. Turned out that it worked like a charm, by luck so far, presumably because he had parasites driving his disease conditions. A functional medicine dr will first run tests to verify that parasites are in existence in the body, then they will prescribe a medication and/or herbal dietary cleanse to rid the body of the parasites and arrive at the same painfree cured state that he did. Testing to determine the cause, treat the cause to heal the body. The functional medicine dr will typically spend one to two hours getting to know you, your lifestyle, your background, to help direct the testing. Frequently there are many reasons for disease and each of those reasons must be addressed. Instead of being sent off to half a dozen different specialists who frequently cross medicate dangerously without communicating with each other on the patient's individual exposures, one dr is treating everything with minimal organ damaging medications. Treatment might include red light therapy, IV nutrition infusion, and specialized diet based on nutrient blood testing. This is just a basic overview of functional medicine drs. I spent a whole day filling out questionnaire, detailing supplements and medications, the physical environment where i live, gathering radiology reports and copies of films, etc in preparation of my first appt. I plan to post the process on the main page fir interested patients to follow for interest to decide if it may be the way they want to go. Yours in better health, P πŸ˜ŒπŸ™

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member. Hi Laura, I responded to your query about my appt with the functional medicine dr on a reply post to you on my wall. Check that location for details. In short, here, it led to more tests and referrals to other drs. This one focuses primarily on nutrition and diet which is an area inalready have civered according to him after reviewing my long list of supplements and dietary habits. Im taking a break from doctring the rest of this week and focusing more on my physical therapy and recovery therapies while waiting the results of recent MRI and other labs. I read your response regarding some of the technical research others have referred to. I find it helpful to keep a secondary device (tablet, phone, laptop) and look up some of the more confusing terminology for better understanding of the technical papers im reading. It does make a big difference in your overall health and whether you improve ifbyou can do the research because the drs will not take the time to break it down for you and relying solely on them is not to your best interest. Reach out anytime. We are all in this together here on this site. Yours in better health P πŸ˜ŒπŸ™.

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member. Hi Laura, Ive been looking into Painguy's recommendations too. It's worth considering talking to one of your drs about before trying it. The fact that Painguy can drop down and do pushups randomly throughout the day suggests to me that his case of autoimmune conditions is solely due to parasites, especially since an anti-parasitic med like Ivermectin works so well for him. However, there are many extreme side affects listed in medical literature, National Institute of Health and others, regarding the use of this drug, especially in inappropriate for the individual dosages and particularly long term. Before trying it, get it right and have a dr monitor your entire body's responses to it closely. Do a Google search, "Ivermectin uses for autoimmune conditions". I have an appointment with my Nephrologist in a couple of hours. Hes also an Osteopath. I plan to ask him about using Ivermectin. It would be awesome if a drug can be taken once or twice to cure all that ails the complexities of autoimmune conditions. However, because they are typically due to multiple variables, multiple approaches to stopping it need to be considered. The key is to identify your individual body's triggers and needs then get rid of the triggers and shore up the needs, typically with nutrition. If your only trigger is parasites, a common one even in developed countries without travel exposure, then Ivermectin will work. If your trigger is stress or EMF exposure or anything else, Ivermectin can kill you. Treat yourself intelligently. Yours in better health, P πŸ˜ŒπŸ™
