Has Anyone Experienced A Wearing Off Effect Following Success With Medications?

I was diagnosed with 'non radiographic' AS (although it's questionable about the NR b/c my doctor saw inflammation on the MRI, brought it to the attention of the radiologist who then agreed) and started with taking Piroxicam at night. Initially and for the first time in my life I woke up in the morning without pain. I then was prescribed Cimzea (the medication for NR AS). It's been close to a year and recently, I started having the same pain in the morning where it's difficult to straighten up… read more

I found pt to be extremely aggravating for my hips and sacroiliac joint. It is worth the try though.
I have found my body builds an immunity against the meds so they all stop working within a couple years. My rheumatologist rotates my meds to help prevent this and give me consistent care.

New to this AS. Started with Celebrex and am now on Naproxen. I would like to stay on OTC NSAIDS if possible. Also found that morning stretches on Spondylitis Association of America called Back in Action Again works wonders. Also doing stretches and movements before getting out of bed helps, too.

I have had AS for 21 years and still doing ok. I started with the typical NSAIDS then Vioxx which helped a lot until they took it off the market. Since then I have used about 6 different TNF blockers (Enbrel, rhemicade, Simponi and others). They would seem to last 2 to 3 years before it wasn’t helping anymore. I have used Cimzia for the last 7 years and has worked well. One of my Rheumatologist recommended taking Methotrexate with the TNF blocker. I would not take because it has too many side effects.

Yes, some people with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) experience a wearing off effect after initially successful treatment with medications. Research from Norway and Denmark found that between 15 percent and 30 percent of people with AS switched to a different biologic over eight to nine years due to:

- Worsening condition
- Lack of efficacy or effectiveness
- Lack of good pain relief
- Drug reactions or complications (e.g., increased risk for infections) or poor tolerance of the drug
- Dislike of the drug by individuals

If symptoms do not improve while using a particular medication, it is advisable to talk to your doctor about switching treatments.
