Members strongly affirmed that ankylosing spondylitis commonly causes leg weakness, muscle spasms, and cramping, with many sharing how these symptoms have progressed to require mobility aids like canes, walkers, or wheelchairs, and describing frightening experiences of their legs suddenly giving out without warning. Several members found relief through medications like Gabapentin, Baclofen, and Lyrica for spasms, steroid injections for numbness and swelling, and muscle relaxers, though many emphasized that consistent morning and evening stretching, staying active throughout the day, and exercises like biking are essential to managing tightness caused by inflammation. A recurring theme was the importance of listening to your body, using supportive aids without shame, and maintaining movement and stretching routines to slow progression and preserve mobility for as long as possible.

I know that very few meds work for me. I did find out that gabapentin actually helps me. I tried to stop taking it to see if it actually helped….yeah, won’t do that again. I don’t get any side effects that are weird, just the ability to walk.

It causes weakness in your legs, YES. This is why morning stretches and exercise is so important! The muscles in the legs get tight due to the inflammation. Riding a bike is good for this but you also need to do the morning stretches! Please go to the Spondylitis Association of America and do the Back in Action Again stretches. There are videos to help you. Also do some form of exercise during the day to strengthen your muscles and the stretches at night. If you don't it'll only get worse!

Yes, also restless leg syndrome. Legs always feel weak. I often use a cane, I have a wheelchair in case it's needed as well. I also wear knee braces as both knees are shot
