Members confirmed that leg weakness is a common experience with ankylosing spondylitis, with many sharing that muscle tightness from inflammation, spasms, and unpredictable episodes where legs give out entirely have significantly impacted their mobility and daily lives. Several members emphasized the importance of daily stretching routines (especially the Spondylitis Association of America's Back in Action exercises), staying active with biking or walking, taking medications like muscle relaxers, Lyrica, or gabapentin, and using mobility aids such as canes, walkers, or wheelchairs when needed. A recurring theme was the fear and frustration of sudden falls without warning, the necessity of pacing oneself to avoid overdoing it, and the shared understanding that progression varies but staying as mobile as possible through stretching and movement can help manage symptoms.

I know that very few meds work for me. I did find out that gabapentin actually helps me. I tried to stop taking it to see if it actually helped….yeah, won’t do that again. I don’t get any side effects that are weird, just the ability to walk.

It causes weakness in your legs, YES. This is why morning stretches and exercise is so important! The muscles in the legs get tight due to the inflammation. Riding a bike is good for this but you also need to do the morning stretches! Please go to the Spondylitis Association of America and do the Back in Action Again stretches. There are videos to help you. Also do some form of exercise during the day to strengthen your muscles and the stretches at night. If you don't it'll only get worse!

Yes, also restless leg syndrome. Legs always feel weak. I often use a cane, I have a wheelchair in case it's needed as well. I also wear knee braces as both knees are shot
