Nausea isn't always talked about enough in the spondylitis world, but it's a real and frustrating part of living with this condition. The inflammation that drives spondylitis doesn't just stay in the joints β€” it can affect the gastrointestinal system too, which is a known comorbidity.

Here are some key reasons why nausea can be connected to spondylitis:

- Gastrointestinal inflammation β€” The same inflammatory processes that affect your spine and joints can also irritate the gut
- Medications β€” NSAIDs and other treatments commonly used for spondylitis can cause nausea and stomach upset
- Chronic pain β€” Persistent, long-term pain can trigger nausea on its own
- Fatigue and sleep disruption β€” These common spondylitis symptoms can make nausea worse

The fact that this started in childhood lines up with how spondylitis can begin early in life, even if it takes years to get a proper diagnosis. It's really worth bringing up your nausea history with your rheumatologist if you haven't already. They can help figure out whether it's inflammation-related, medication-related, or something else connected to your spondylitis that needs attention. You've been dealing with this a long time β€” you deserve some answers! πŸ’›

@PatriciaBelcher sorry to hear of your symptoms. Nausea is the worst. Thank you for your insights and suggestions. I'm glad you are able to find something to help. This is something I've struggled with for years. Have a pleasant day.

Nausea is also an issue for me,, especially with bloating at its worst. My belly sticks out far enough, I can rest my coffee cup on it! Entire colon stops working, so of course all that pressure on my lungs changes my voice and makes me feel sick. Cause is clearly autoimmune, and Gastro consult suggests helpful suggestions: eat brewed foods (I now drink kambucha daily) and take minimal dose of MiraLax every day, not just when you think you need it (it does not foster dependency). Blessings, Pat
