@A MySpondylitisTeam Member. See my response to the posted article "HLA-B27 and the Genetics of Spondylitis". You are much better off getting a GI360 Mapping Test. Possibly a mold mycotoxins, and heavy metals test as well. San Diego has plenty of disease causing toxins that are more likely your drivers for your disease process than genes. There are loads of excellent Functional Medicine practitioners in your area who can and will serve you far better than a non functional medicine practitioner. If I were living there I would seek out Dr Micah Yu to help me unravel what's making me sick to put my healthy life back together, Im almost 100% certain he's in San Diego. He's a triple board certified Rheumatologist, Functional Medicine practitioner and Integrated medicine specialist. Lucky you to be there to meet him in person. You're missing out if you dont. Im not a patient of his, but have been thinking about letting my local practitioner go and joining his team, for a third of the cost as well as greater knowledge. He sees patients virtually too according to his site. At the very least look him up online and pay close attention to his extensive free YouTube videos. This is definitely not one of the quack loud mouths on YouTube. He makes far more sense, in my lay opinion, than any of the published articles on this site. Sorry Myspondylitisteam.com, you guys are awesome, but behind the healing curve for this millennium. Yours in better health P 😌 πŸ™

The gene you're referring to is called HLA-B27, and there is a specific genetic blood test that checks for its presence. It's one of the key tools doctors use when spondylitis is suspected.

It's worth knowing that having HLA-B27 doesn't automatically mean you'll develop spondylitis β€” and not everyone with spondylitis tests positive for it either. Its usefulness can also vary depending on your background:

- More than 95% of white people with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) test positive
- Around 80% of people from Mediterranean countries with AS have the gene
- About 50% of African Americans with AS test positive Doctors typically don't order this test unless you're already showing symptoms like persistent back pain and stiffness. A full diagnosis usually involves more than just this one test β€” it's combined with other blood work, imaging, and a physical exam to get the full picture.
