I also use a hot tub. And staying active and moving around sure helps too.

How can you manage costochondritis when your doctor isn't currently treating your AS?

Even without active AS treatment, there are several ways to help ease costochondritis symptoms:

Heat and Cold Therapy
Alternating between hot and cold compresses can provide relief. Heat loosens muscles around the joints and increases flexibility, while cold reduces inflammation and dulls pain. Try heating pads or hot water bottles for about 20 minutes at a time.

Deep Breathing Exercises
Practice gentle rib-expanding breaths to help with chest tightness. Find a relaxing spot, do some deep breathing exercises, and rest when needed. A physical therapist can show you proper technique.

Gentle Massage
Massaging your neck and shoulder area may help you expand your chest more easily and practice breathing exercises. Avoid tender spots that could trigger symptoms. Consider seeing a physical therapist or massage therapist for safe techniques. Physical Activity Modifications
Limit heavy lifting or activities that worsen symptoms during flare-ups. Once pain subsides, gradually increase gentle exercises like stationary biking, tai chi, or modified yoga. A physical therapist can suggest exercises that won't trigger costochondritis.

Over-the-Counter Options
NSAIDs can help manage pain and inflammation from costochondritis, though you should discuss this with your doctor first.

Since chest pain can sometimes indicate serious issues, don't hesitate to contact your healthcare provider if symptoms worsen or you're unsure about what you're experiencing.

I beat back my costochondroitis with daily deep diaphragmatic breathing exercises to expand my ribcage capacity gently, slowly. It took about a year or more to get it strong enough to be able to speak clearly again. I used to have to take as deep a breath as possible and speak on the exhale because i couldnt project my voice due to constriction around the ribcage. The hot tub Dan mentioned is helpful too. I try to do that at least twice a week. Bad weeks I try to get in it 3 times, a full hour with about 6 pounds of magnesium salt is super helpful. Yours in better health P ๐Ÿ˜Œ ๐Ÿ™
