What is slipping rib syndrome and do people with spondylitis experience it?

Slipping rib syndrome isn't specifically mentioned in relation to spondylitis, but people with spondylitis do commonly experience rib-related pain and chest discomfort.

The most common rib issue in spondylitis is costochondritis β€” inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the breastbone. This typically affects the upper ribs on the left side and can cause chest pain that might feel intense.

Many people with spondylitis also experience:
* Stiffening of the rib cage
* Difficulty with chest expansion while breathing
* Fusion of spinal sections that can lead to rounding of the spine (kyphosis)
* Pain in the sternum and above the diaphragm

A MySpondylitisTeam member shared, "My sternum hurts β€” and above my diaphragm."

If you're experiencing chest or rib pain, it's important to talk with your doctor. While it may be related to spondylitis inflammation, chest pain should always be evaluated to rule out heart or lung problems that need immediate attention.
