A gene is not a diagnosis for Spondylitis. Many people without the gene have it and many people with the gene do not. It just tells you a very small amount of susceptibility. There are many i have learned since recently ordering my own genetic mitochondrial function genetic profile. All it says is whether or not you are at risk. For example, looking at my own test result, i have several genes with variations on the alleles that make me at high risk for obesity. But at 5'6" and 115 pounds i am quite far from obese. And i do not have the HLAB27 gene, but I have whole body involvement of Psoriatic Spondylitis. The real issue with genetic predisposition is what are you going to do about it? Will you take heed as i did when i learned i have high risk for obesity (long before any blood test for genetics) and adopt healthier habits to combat the dread prognosis? Or will you use it as an open invitation to stick to the couch and never try to get moving forward? There is no medicine to cure it. But there are many things you can do to stop it in its tracks, put it into full remission (with or without a diagnosis), and keep from ever having disability as a result. Identify your triggers. Get rid of the triggers. Thats it. Although not very easy for most people. Yours in better health P 😌🙏
Testing for the HLA-B27 gene can be done through a simple blood test. Given your family history of joint problems, the best first step is to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or rheumatologist to discuss getting tested.
