My pain doc, who is honest, trustworthy, and has tried all other non-surgical treatments, recommended SI joint fusion for long-term pain relief. There’s one more diagnostic injection scheduled but all other injections have confirmed SI joint dysfunction. She was completely honest regarding the procedure when I asked - recovery can take 2 weeks up to 3 months, I may have a lot of pain during recovery. How was your experience?
I’ve had my metal for 17 years never had anything come apart , but the weight of the cage killed the vertebrae above it so new hardware was added . I’m so glad I had it done , thé pain in my hip and down my leg is much better .
@A MySpondylitisTeam Member. Thanks Sherri! When people tell me that I don't look handicapped or sick i always reply with a greatful, "Thank you! I work really hard at it, it's a full time job and i appreciate the encouragement." Always be greatful for compliments even if they dont always feel like a compliment. 😌🙏
I take about 3 months to heal I’m then off the Walker for assistance but a year to be totally healed . I can walk a mile , but it been 5 years since my last lower back surgery . But you have to build up to à mile . My best advise is keep moving , even if it only 20 feet . Most people give in to their pain and walk hunched over . Stand and sit straight . I had someone tell me you don’t look handicapped when I park handicapped . I turned around and lifted my shirt to see my 6 inch scar , they said oh okay 😁
@A MySpondylitisTeam Member. Very helpful Sherri! Thanks! If i may ask, do you recall how long your recivery was? Can you walk unassisted and painfree for one mile? That's my goal and the only reason I am considering any surgery. I havent been able to do that for a few years now, putting off surgical fixes while trying everything else first. 😌🙏
Trent, on my team so you might be able to find him scrolling through my team members on my wall, he had it done a year or so ago. He even has a picture of the metal bands on xray posted. Not from him that i have heard, but ive heard others report screws coming undone and migrating through the skin or elsewhere in the body.😳. Ask your surgeon if he uses screws. I consider it too when mine act up enough to cause pelvic pain that amounts to what hard labor felt like. Ugh. That happens to me when i dont do the PT for it at least 3 or 4 days a week, which happened recently. Then it takes a couple months to get under control again. Heavy sigh. It gets flat out exhausting. Trent seemed pleased but i havent heard from him in awhile. He is younger and was very physically active doing construction type work so probably pretty physically active and otherwise fit. That makes a big difference when it comes to success with or without surgery. Very strong abdominal, lumbar, oblique and gluteus muscles make all the difference because that supports the SIs with or without surgical intervention. If youve been to PT, keep doing what you learned as best you can before and as soon as possible after surgery to give it the gest chance if working well for you. Dont be surprised if you still have pain after surgery, even forever after. Most of the time no surgery leaves anyone 100% painfree.
