Going To Go Off Biologics
A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’ve been getting UTIs every month for almost a year. When I was younger I could work with the occasional one. Now I get very sick 4-5 days before getting the typical symptoms of burning, etc. At my age of 64 there’s a very real chance of getting septic from these. Anyway, I’m going to take a break from biologics and methotrexate for about 6 months. Seeing rheumatologist in 2 weeks to discuss it with him and I know he won’t like it. But I have to think about my body as a whole, not just AS. Any… read more

The many symptoms of Spondyloarthritis is overwhelming for other people in our lives. We become our best advocates. So, we learn and adapt to this progressive disease. I'm so glad we all have each other.

So, very glad you are sharing your thoughtful insight and questions. The frequent UTI's are definitely something worth discussing here. Since methotrexate suppresses the immune system and Biologics target specific SpA issues, UTI's might be triggered by either medications, internal organs, hydration or .... Hopefully, someone here has experience with this same concern. In the meantime, keep drinking water! I'm drinking a glass to our health. Here's to you!

The doctor seems interested in the outcome for you. Knowing the effectiveness and risks of medications versus not taking medications is a very personal decision based on consultation with the doctor. It's your body, your decision. Thank you for sharing this.

I'm wondering at what age to stop taking some medications. OTC and herbal methods is a less expensive and it has become a good enough alternative. But, we must be careful otherwise we could create psychological and behavioral problems requiring inpatient medical intervention. I have seen enough of that to make me pause and look for scientific data to support self-treatment plans. The good news is that data is starting to be produced. But, I'm not seeing enough, just that some individuals are lucky enough to respond well for an unknown amount of time. Alternative medications are becoming better known and I am hoping that one or more will become effective and healthy for me.

If you, Suzanne, find something that works for your experience that you are sharing above, please share the details here. I look forward to reading what you write and learning from you.

Hey hey Peeps! I just popped over from the Mypsoriasisteam.com group and a couple other forums for that. I have potentially good alternatives for you. I have, or did, most of the aforementioned conditions by y'all (FL girl) and resolved completely the intestinal and urological ones. Diet alone. For the gut, I stopped Chrons cold, well..after 2 or 3 weeks, 10 years ago. Done and gone. FODMAP diet. Research it. Tough. Best thing I've ever done for myself. Also, Probiotics, loads of them. I went gut microbiome desert from antibiotics almost 20 years ago - drs "practicing" too much🙄😬. I swear they'll kill us if we let them. I do a ton of research. Full time job for me figuring this crapola out. Garden of Life.com has awesome blends for Probiotics and other supps, several to choose from, great product, ethical, science backed etc, one of the best supplements companies. Lactobacillus Johnsonii specifically by Foodsforgut.com to target mood problems like anxiety , depression. I've been using a multi from Garden of Life and the single strain LJ for a year and doing much better in every aspect of disease. Do your reading on the gut microbiome to body/brain connection. Check National Institute of Health.org, Medical News Today.com, National Geographic medical sections, Cleveland Clinic, and of course, Mayo for more info. Those are most of my regular sources.
GOING OFF BIOLOGICS, that caught my eye. Do a read on Andrographolide, a byproduct of the Andrographis plant, used for centuries in India, Ayurveda medicine, and China, Traditional Chinese Medicine. Does what most bios do, yet maintains healthy part of immune system. Good for bronchial infections, cancer, liver, immune system and more. I started this one in September, still in my test phase (3/4 months one at a time). My experience so far - I took my last Skyrizi injection in Sept, less than 48 hours later had acute bronchitis and sinus infection. Not normal for me at all. After I started an Andrographolide/Turmeric blend called Arthro-Immune from Life Extension.com in 3 days my lungs were clear. No bad affects so far. Do your reading though! Not good for kidney disease or if you want to have a baby. Low doses considered safe.
New to me, 2 weeks now, Fucoxanthin. This is from brown algae, supposedly a strong antioxidant and anti inflammatory. Another wonder from nature sounding candidate for those of us fed up being the practice end of Medical "practice". My current blend is by Garden of Life (again) Omega-3 with green (Astaxanthin) and brown (fucoxanthin) algaes. The past couple days I have noticed my pain level drop by 3 points within a couple hours of taking this supplement. I can't take Nsaids, not even Tylenol, so this has-been a game changer for my ability to make Thanksgiving dinner.

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member, have you gotten with a urologist about the uti's? That's saying there is a problem with your kidneys and bladder to get them that frequently. Praying for you.
