Dealing With Pain
A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was diagnosed in Dec. I am trying to exercise (yoga), walk, drink lots of water, eat healthier, etc..Pray daily, couldnt go without it..

Does the pain get better or lesser? How do you deal with it and daily stress?

I was only diagnosed in mid 2021, but yes, from my experience there are ups and downs that come with this condition.
Exercise is extremely helpful but it's about finding a balance, as there is a point at which you can overdo it.
I play golf which helps alot, the combination of walking and swinging a golf club (my rheumatologist also has spondylitis and she plays golf too). Yoga is also extremely helpful.
But like @A MySpondylitisTeam Member said, everyone is unique and it's about finding what works for you.

In my experience the pain can only be 'managed' because the disease is progressive.

I find that any kind of movement helps...... yoga, stretching, walking and deep breathing. I also have and use an inversion table which feels really good.

I have a Rheumatologist who follows my case and has prescribed Amegvita Biologic medication which helps with pain and stiffness, as well as my Inflammatory Bowel Disease (which is associated to the AS).

I am also treated for complex trauma, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD and depression; therefore, I see a counsellor weekly and have appointments with a psychiatrist every 3 months who monitors my symptoms and medication.

I belong to 12-step groups as well, particularly, ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families). I have a support network of friends in their healing recoveries and this wonderful group for AS.....

..... to summarize.... movement, professional counselling, professionally monitored medication, groups associated to AS/mental health and supportive friends on a similar journey is how I live life now. I know if these supports were NOT in place, I am 100% certain I would be in a horrible place physically and mentally.

Wishing you health and wellness :)

I find that walking is really beneficial for me and my condition. It is not for everyone though. I find it eases my pain down. This condition is unique to that individual and relief cones from many different sources

I just find having a (healthy) distraction is key. My mom has had this for almost 50 years and her applique and knitting are what keep her going. I only recently stopped working and i noticed having time to focus on my pain can make some days harder. Wishing you a pain free day.

Tha ks for your responses. I have always been a worrier/stressy type person. (anxiety & panic attacks) The yoga has been helping with the breathing/stretching. I do enjoy walking as well. Thanks again 😊
