I’m having a pelvic MRI Monday morning (early early morning, so fasting is no problem!) it’s my first MRI but I have had three surgeries, one under general & two under local anesthesia. I have a bit of white coat syndrome but no claustrophobia. Any tips or advice in preparing mentally/emotionally/physically? Thanks!

Members offered practical and emotional support for managing a first pelvic MRI, with the most consistent advice being to keep eyes closed, use earplugs or headphones with calming music, and consider taking an anti-anxiety medication beforehand if prone to nerves or claustrophobia. Several members shared that focusing on breathing, meditation, prayer, or mentally transporting to a happy place helped them stay calm during the procedure, with some noting they even fell asleep from the vibrations. A recurring theme was reassurance that while the noise can be jarring and lying still may cause discomfort, the experience is manageable and over quickly, typically lasting around 20 to 25 minutes.

They will give you some earplugs and they will ask if you want to listen to music. Say yes. Close your eyes, listen to the music, and hold still. If not they will have you start all over. I just had another one a week ago. I have a lot of anxiety and don't like being in small places for long. MRI can take about 25 minutes to do. I am sending positive vibes.

It doesn’t bother me at all to get them, but my husband nuts up. He does take a Valium too. What I do to relax me is ask for headphones with music playing. Sometimes they even have movies they can play. Try to relax and picture yourself being very still so they can get great pictures, and tell yourself maybe they’ll find something new that can help you if they get good pictures. Don’t entertain thoughts of being scared. Just tell yourself it’s not a big deal and you’re going to be fine & do great!
