Recumbent Trikes For Exercise
A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Anyone use a Recumbant Trike for exercise ?
I'm looking into it, as walking causes a pain in my hips that I describe as "Locking up" followed by spasm like pain in my lower back.
On the recumbant trike, your in a almost 0 gravity position, and pedaling for muscular, cardio excercise. Hoping it will work for me ! If so I'll let everyone know !

Me again !
I was able to Lease a Trike from a local Veterans Group based in Charlotte NC called Honor the Warriors, for $1/Year !
I've got to tell you all this is the best, most fun exercise I've been able to take part in in years ! Little to no pain, other than from lack of use of muscles.
Recumbent Trikes is very low impact, but provide great Cardio, and muscular workout for legs, hips, core, even shoulders as my shoulders are the only area where I had any soreness.
I just completed my longest ride Sunday, 13.2 miles, 1:41 hrs moving time.
Recumbent Trikes aren't cheap, but you can find them pre-owned for much less than New prices.
If your a Veteran you may be able to obtain a Trike through the VA. See your Primary Care Dr. for evaluation by Physical Therapy. I am leasing my trike to be able to log miles/hrs to meet requirements for the VA assistance.
I Recommend Trident Trikes in Lincolnton, NC as they are one of the most economical trikes on the market. You can call them, and set up a time to go and try out several different models right on a Rail Trail that runs behind the Shop.
In Oct in Dayton, Oh Cycle - Con is scheduled where you will be able to see, and try out, almost every make and model of Trike Made ! I'm hoping to go !
Cat Trikes, and Ice Trikes, along with Trident, and Greenspeed, Terra Trikes are popular brands.
Check it out ! I can't walk a 1/4 mile, but was able to trike 13+ miles ! I can already tell I have better balance, oh yea, I've lost 6 lbs in 3 1/2 weeks of triking !

Well hope everyone is safe, and Covid free !
Guess I need to update my progress in my Triking venture !
I'm still riding, with my longest ride being 38 miles ! I regularly ride 20+ miles, and lesser amounts. To say Triking has changed my life would be a Understatement ! I can walk on the beach again and even get down on the sand to play with my Granddaughters ! I can now get out and do Yard Work! I joked with my wife that our home was starting to look like someone actually lives here again ! That in itself is a huge boost to my emotional state !
I know the change comes from actually being up and moving, and using muscles i haven't for years. In Recumbent Trikes have found something that I can do that causes little to no pain, provides much needed exercise, and is really fun !
I had lower back pain for over 2 years that I just couldnt shake, after MRIs, pain meds, Physical Therapy, Acupuncture, you name it. 3 months into the Trike riding I started to notice less pain in my back, 8 months+ in and the back pain is completely gone !
My leg strength and core strength is back to levels of 20 maybe 30 years ago ! Not bad considering a little over a year ago, the VA wanted to issue me a Walker !
Look into Recumbant Trikes it may change your life for the better !
Hope you all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR !

Sounds like you are enjoying the trike! Taking pressure off the back and hips can make you better all over. Keep up the exercise.

I have a desk-cycle that my son got me for a Christmas present 2 years ago. I would cycle an hour every morning , 7 days a week. Now I use it for my exercise for my AS. I take it easy and will soon pick up the speed,I also take cbd capsules and ibprophen and tylenol and after6 weeks my pain is subsiding. I have to use a walker as my left leg buckled on me 3 times before I was diagnosed with AS. I have had arthritis for over 50 years and noticed my back would bother me after doing yard work or vacuuming and mopping floor, but just thought it was my age catching up with me as I have always been active, and I am learning so much about AS and how many people have it. I am doing better.
