Just one glass of wine causes a 2 week long flare in me difficult to climb out of. You're better off quitting alcohol completely. Seek out nootropic herbs for the mental high, no hangover and weight gain is an added bonus. For the flavor, experiment with various fruits and veggies cut up into spring water. You'll never get well from spondylitis as long as you continue with alcohol. Alcohol is toxic to the body and will always increase inflammatory activity.πŸ˜’ Dont be down on me for the reality check. I miss my martinis and wine as much as anyone else. But it's definitely worth quitting for the freedom of movement. Yours in better health P 😌 πŸ™

Is it okay to drink alcohol occasionally with spondylitis, and what are the best drinks to have?

Drinking alcohol with spondylitis requires careful consideration. While the decision is ultimately yours, there are several important factors to keep in mind.

Alcohol may worsen inflammation and pain. Since spondylitis causes inflammation in the spine, back, and hips, and alcohol can lead to widespread inflammation throughout the body, drinking could potentially intensify your symptoms. A MySpondylitisTeam member noted experiencing increased blood pressure and pain after drinking.

Alcohol can also accelerate disease progression. Research shows that people with spondylitis who drink alcohol experience significantly more spinal damage over time compared to those who don't drink.

Additionally, alcohol poses risks when combined with common spondylitis medications. It can interact with NSAIDs like ibuprofen, increasing the risk of bleeding ulcers. If you're taking methotrexate, drinking is not advised due to increased liver damage risk.

Regarding which drinks are "best" - there's no evidence suggesting certain types of alcohol are safer than others for people with spondylitis. The concerns apply to all alcoholic beverages.

The most important step is talking with your rheumatologist about your specific situation, medications, and any drinking habits. They can provide personalized guidance based on your treatment plan and health status.
