Has Anyone Dealt With Urinary Incontinence With AS? Do I Maybe Have Cauda Equine Syndrome?? Nerves At The Base Of Spine Damaged ¿
A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I read online “ Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) can cause bladder problems in rare cases due to a neurological complication called cauda equine syndrome, where the nerves at the base of the spine are damaged. This can lead to symptoms such as urinary incontinence and retention
Over many years, severe cases of AS can result in the formation of scars in the bundle of nerves at the spine's base, leading to problems such as urinary incontinence, lack of bowel control, and sexual dysfunction.

Hi,

So sorry you are dealing with this. As farvasvI understand it - if you have numbness around your genitals and back passage then it could be a medical emergency and you should contact your Dr. If not, then it is worth speaking to your rheumatologist and a urologist or gynecologist. I hope you find answers soon, and that it is "good" news. Take care.

I'm 58, been in full menopause for 6 or 7 years now. That info so you know I'm not some weird guy asking this question: have you tried kegel exercises and, if so, are you certain that you are doing them correctly? Its hard to get right, hard to even feel them at first. But after working at it consistently on a daily basis you should be able to hold the squeeze a full minute. It took me a few months to get good at it, then no more issues. But if you're sure you're doing it right etc, it may well be a nerve issue. So sorry you can't get a dr right now. I don't lean towards law suits, but I'm pretty sure that your prior employer broke the law for letting you go due to your disability. If you need insurance coverage and can prove that is why you were let go, you might be able to sue for insurance cover. Just a thought so you can hope to be treated. 😌🙏

We all grow stronger through sharing with each other our experiences, both the good and the bad. To know that you aren't the only one experiencing something unpleasant, to learn more than one or two possible causes, and to be informed of many ways to deal with it from what others have tried is the best medicine we can all hope for. This is an excellent platform to help you through your journey to stronger days.😌🙏

@Aexa When I have a severe flare sometimes I have both urinary and bowel incontinence. Other times my bladder locks up where can’t urinate. Then when flare passes I go back to normal. My bowel incontinence isn’t bad. Just my rectum takes a while to close. But when not in a flare it doesn’t bother me. But when it happens it can be scary because like you say never know if it is temporary or not.
