Sulphasalazine
A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Anyone take this?? Not a big fan of it. I think it has caused me to have some depression. Thoughts?

I’ve been taking sulphasalazine for about 6 weeks now. It seems to be helping. My Rheumatologist said that it’s important that I take it to slow the progression of AS. So, I’m going to stick with it.

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member Now that I recall. Yeah, antibiotics cause me to have depression after being on them a period of time. I forgot. Its usually after taking them for a while. I think that possibly the depletion of good bacteria is the cause for me. Try to take probiotics to see if it helps. If not and you are not on any psychiatric meds or any other mood altering meds, you can try 5-HTP (over the counter supplement) to help with depression. Its a precursor to serotonin, which is why you don’t take it with those types of meds.

Yes, it is supposed to help with Spondylitis. I did speak with my rheumatologist last week. He took me down to one pill a day. If I still feel low, I should stop it. He said this is a side effect.

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member I read up on this drug. Its used to treat Ulcerative Colitis which is what my initial chronic health diagnosis back in 2008. Are you saying it also helps with AS? Weird thing is I am already on max Mesalamine which is the main ingredient in the UC medication I take, minus the antibiotic. Attn: @A MySpondylitisTeam Member
