Advanced AS And PT
A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have read many articles that suggest physical therapy as a component of an AS treatment plan.
My doctors have never suggested PT. I was an avid golfer in my past life. When I ask about returning to golf, in the future they do not respond. Granted, that currently I lack the energy and the ability to to retrieve my golf ball from the hole but when ask what my goals are, one is to play golf again.
Would PT help?

Yes your answer so helps. I unfortunately was hurt by a chiropractor in 2020. He ruptured a disc and pinched a nerve which I believe threw in into this disease because I was immobile for 7 months until my back surgery. I will get scheduled for PT tomorrow! Thank you thank you

I've done more rounds of PT in my lifetime than I can count. As long as your therapist listens to you and has some idea about AS, then all should be fine. Always advocate for yourself in PT. My therapist was able to help me find alternatives stretches to work rather than flare me up again. I highly recommend PT so that you can remain as mobile as possible as the disease progresses. I am 56 yrs old and my AS is in my upper back, neck and shoulders. I just recently went through PT again after discovering a tear in my upper bicep and in May was in a small fender bender causing whiplash to my already sensitive area of my neck. It took 5 months to recover from the whiplash due to PT, massage and chiropractic. Had I not had the PT, I wouldn't have learned to do some things differently to keep from causing more damage. Hope this helps in your decision of PT. 🤗

I am at this point as well, they want me to do physical therapy but I'm too scared it will make my back worse. Hope you find the guidance you are looking for and you get to play golf again. My goal is gardening outside again.

Yes. I recieve treatment from a specialized physical therapist in AS and i find it so helful and relevant. My goal is to walk painfree for at least 30 minutes so i have a plan designed by my physical therapist to reach that. I hope you find one that is willing to work with you to achieve your goal 👌 all the best!!
