Anyone Else Have Issues With Dizziness?
A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been having a lot of problems with extreme dizziness. It started after an MRI on my head which I had due to daily migraines. I believe that the dizziness stems from my neck issues. I was prescribed meclizine but hasn't made a difference. Any thoughts or suggestions?

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member, dizziness is not just from medications. Cervical vertigo, called cervicogenic dizziness, often accompanied my severe cervical AS, and now always is present. The prescription is physical therapy, which worked when I was younger.

I'm so sorry to read so many also experiencing this head flexing, rotations, ..., snap, crackle, pop, and more crackling...just need one more crackle or snap to feel better! And, most of the time, it just doesn't happen anymore as the years roll along. That is, until I learn different massage techniques, physical exercises, and, learn... We all go through this endless cycle of adapting.

I would absolutely love to see a video of contemporary dancers doing a dance that expresses the spine and neck exercises from the experience of AS patients, and their loved ones struggling to understand it.

Regaining and sustaining neck flexibility is so important. It seems adapting and learning something that safely enables continued well-being is what helps us the most. It becomes our full-time job, especially as we age.

In short, cervicogenic dizziness isn't listed as a common symptom by the medical providers. I'm hoping doctors and nurses on this website underscore, for the greater medical community, how common this symptom is for AS patients. Headaches and migraines also result from this. I would think cervical spinal cord impingement would be enough to trigger this conversation with their patients.

Great question, please share whatever you learn about this. I'll be reading what you write.

I saw my primary care doctor today. He diagnosed that the dizziness was actually vertigo. I asked him about my neck being the cause of the vertigo and migraines. He said migraines maybe but vertigo was an inner ear balance issue. He ordered vestibular physical therapy. The issue is I currently have physical therapy on my heel/Achilles tendon. And insurance will not cover two areas at the same time. I feel that the vertigo interferes more with my life than my heel. I see the physical therapist on Friday and will talk with her. I keep you posted on my progress.

I get dizzy a lot of times when I stand up. I always thought it was from my blood pressure meds. Haven’t considered AS and neck issues.
I have a lot of problems with my neck.
