How Long Have You Had AS
A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question đź’

Hello everyone,I was diagnosed with AS in 2019, and taking Humira. I was wondering how long others have had AS and were you taking Humira, and for how long? I'm fairly young and to read some of the cases that are worse than mine is frightening. I don't want to progress to that depth of pain. Don't get me wrong I've had some pain, but I'm curious as to how long others have lived with AS.

Your reply warms my heart and brings tears to my eyes because my girls are my everything. I just dont want anything to take me out of this world faster. I have so much left to do in my life and I want to be able to do them. I worry that if I stop humira I won't be able to get around and move as well. But like you said above it should be a apart of many things including working out, staying active and staying away from those inflammatory foods. I'll be praying for you. I'm thankful for your replys. Please keep me posted on your anti inflammatory food approach. I will start doing yoga now like you said to build those muscles. We will keep our heads up and again I thank you so much!

Sam, I wish I could tell you I do not have stiff joints. I am afraid I do wake up with a stiff lower back and have episodes where other joints bother me worse...knees, hips, and feet/ankles. I am currently not working as teaching zapped all my energy, it was just too much. That said, I feel very fortunate that I still have days where I can be very active... we hike, we recently camped, I am helping to renovate this house and do yard work. Someone on here once posted something that I remind myself of daily now: instead of thinking "I can't because..." I think, "I could if...". So for example we are retaring my dad's roof. I couldn't do any of the job that requires bending or pushing/pulling the paint roller. But I could sit on the ground and do the borders. For yard work I cant bend to weed, but I can sit and pull. So it's about finding what works with your own body and being mindful to listen to your body... stay active daily but don't push too hard. I used to try to warrior through pain and give myself points for just pushing through. That was a mistake... I should have listened to my body and learned to ask for help. (I'm still working on that part.)
One other thing, if I could go back 20 years to being 32, I would start daily yoga sooner. A strong core is essential especially with AS. Everyone after 50 starts having issues with their body anyway, especially with their back. So I wish I was starting my 50s with a strong core already. That's not to say yoga is for everyone, but it would be great if you could find movement that works for you now so aging and AS will be easier later. There are many videos of yoga for AS or stretches for AS online.
I understand your worries, about your future with your girls. My kids and my aging parents are my "why"... why I don't eat Inflammatory foods, why I exercise... I want to still be an active helpful mom and daughter for all of them.
Wishing you well... One day at a time, one foot in front of the other!

Mimi, it was the same for me with the HLA-B27 test. But to my knowledge no one else has been diagnosed in my family. But I do believe someone has got to have it other than me. So you don't have any stiff joints, or anything? That's so wonderful! You give me hope that I will still have a long life with AS. I am 32 and I look forward to see my girls get big.

I also think it depends on the person cuz my daughter was diagnosed around the time before she got pregnant and her pregnancy was awful but she also has rheumatoid arthritis on top of it her ankle swelled up pretty bad she had lots and lots of flare-ups because she could not do her shot not the one she's on now now she's on humira twice a week I'm taking the enbril once a week
