I have been having pain in my shins towards the outside and close to my knees. It sounds like shin splints, but I am not a runner. My guess it's one more site of enthesitis, but I'm just wondering if anyone else gets this.
Yes, I also have shin pain daily on the middle and side of both legs.
Thanks! This is all helpful. I will try these exercises!
@A MySpondylitisTeam Member. I do a couple shin exercises and stretches that help me. I'm not sure we are feeling the same thing though. To strengthen the tiny muscle in front below the knees, tiny on my chicken legs anyway, I sit with my feet flat on the floor directly below my knees. Then raise the toes keeping heels on the floor. Hold this position as long as possible, but not more than a minute. Do this ten times. Sometimes I hold for a minute, then up and down 10 to 30 times. My favorite ankle loosening mobility stretch that feels good is to stand, hold onto wall or furniture for support, weight on one foot, other foot (with tennis shoes on) touch only toe tip to the floor, knee loosely bent, then turn ankle in circles gently one direction ten times then reverse for 10. Let momentum move the circle, allow it to progress up to the hip for gentle joint lossening stretch. Maybe it will help. It might have something to do with your recent travel and change in activity, even surfaces, while helping your parents. Maybe you're wearing different shoes doing all that, just a thought.
I have peripheral neuropathy in lower legs and feet which started with shin pain and a sensation of heat around ankles. It's all caused by my AS. I've been on humira for 4 months and couldn't say it's helped with pain but hopefully it's slowing the progression some. I would definitely recommend mentioning to your rheumatologist.
