Does Anyone Lift Weights And Run? If So, How Do You Manage The Pain?

A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was diagnosed last week and not on meds yet. I don’t want to give up exercising but I am in so much pain, even with walking. Will being on biological help so I can workout without pain? My visit is tomorrow with my Rheumatologist and he plans to put me on Biologics.

I think it depends on the extent of damage and where it's affecting you. I was in so much pain and used to walk at least 3 miles a day and some light weights at gym. The pain got so bad I couldn't walk or do any weights. After starting humira, it helped the pain subside enough to be able to walk 2 miles a day now. Still can't do weights have a back and neck fusion. The medication helped greatly but not completely. The walking also seems to help release some kinda hormone or something that seems to help with pain also. Hope you get some relief soon

Just keep exercising that's the best thing you can do it really helps out a lot and I wish you the best.

From what I know the medication should reduce the pain considerably. I go to the gym and it does help me. However I found I must not push my self to hard don’t compete with others or yourself. For me best exercises are machines that support you, not free weights, also running on a treadmill ok although prefer cross trainer.

Hello and welcome. I am not able to run, but I also have never taken biologics. I find walking and yoga work best for my body. The important thing is to keep moving while listening to your body and to modify exercises to fit AS. Gratefully there is a lot of helpful information and videos available now. It's also important to strengthen your back and core muscles. Your rheumatologist should give you info on basic AS stretches and exercises.
Best of luck.
