Did Anyone Have Little To No Back Pain In The Beginning?

Did Anyone Have Little To No Back Pain In The Beginning?

I have had little to no back pain, but have all the other symptoms of AS. Major Hip & Buttock involvement. Shoulders & Heels also but to a lesser degree. I can no longer chew one than one piece of gum at a time or anything thick like steak because the pain in my jaw is so bad. My sternum hurts and above my diaphragm. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

This sounds like what my husband has. He was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis but for years had trouble with jaw pain until he was diagnosed with TMJ. He wore a night brace for awhile cause he was grinding his teeth. He can't eat 'hard' food that requires a lot of chewing for that reason.
His syptoms for AS were also a lot of hip and buttocks problems. He carried a sitting pad with him everywhere cause it hurt so much to sit on a hard chair or a real cushy one. The cushy ones would hurt his back. He sleeps on a pad that is used for camping because it is firm. A soft bed kills his back, hips, etc. He also has foot problems like planters fasciitis. He puts pads in his shoes.
Take care now,
JW

Your description of your symptoms mirrors my own except my back is also involved. Your description of the pain in your sternum and diaphragm was so helpful. I haven’t known exactly how to explain the internal ache deep in my thorax. Thanks so much for helping me define my problem.

I appreciate your feedback. I realize no one on here is a Rheumy. I just saw a new one on Tuesday and he told me he is leaning toward a diagnosis of AS (maybe in combo with RA). I just thought maybe someone had started out with similar symptoms. My dad has AS and has had horrible back pain for years, but my main symptom is my hips and pelvic girdle. Thanks again.
