Anyone On A Biologic Med, Have You Received/taken The Shingles Vaccine? Your Experience Afterwards? Side Effects?

I'm 52, on Enbrel and wondering about if I should get the Shingles vaccine.

I had the Shingrix vaccine (even though I am well under 50). It is two doses and NOT a live vaccine. I had the first dose before starting my biologic and I think the second was after I started the biologic. The first dose wasn't too bad but I felt like I had the flu for a couple of days. The second doese was terrible, fever and definitely felt like the flu, complete with horribly sore joints. Only lasted a couple of days and still much better than having Shingles. As the commercial says 'shingles doesn't care' about who you are or how old or young you are. For me it was worth it to protect myself as much as possible. I was told the Zostavax is a live vaccine, so would probably not be the best idea while taking a biologic. The Shingrix is also supposed to be more effective. Hope this helps!

There are two different vaccines.
I suggest you take one because you can get shingles in the eyes and then you WILL be blind. Shingles is nasty.

The Zoster (shingles) vaccine contains live weakened forms of the virus which can provide exposure to the health immune system so your body can learn to fight it off without making you seriously ill. However in immunocompromised patients whether by illness (like cancer) or treatment of an illness (meds like Embrel) the risk of the weaken strain taking hold and making you seriously ill is too high. Therefore its generally not recommended. Please let providers know or remind them that you are on immunocompromising medications before taking a vaccine.

I was told to go off the Embrel as the shingles vaccine is "live". I had the injection had no problems with it, and went back on the Enbrel. Contact AMGEN for information on how long to be off...AMGEN IS VERY GOOD WITH THEIR ADVICE.
