What Are Your Experiences With Celebrex And Humera?

A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello everyone! I need some advice. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and have a really hard time with anti-inflammatory meds. All of the nsaids that my Drs have given me to this point and the otc ones I've tried on my own have really done a nasty number on my stomach. So, today my new rheumatologist prescribed Celebrex for me saying that he has had some really good luck with it being better tolerated by patients with stomach issues like myself. We also discussed my possibly finally biting the… read more

Members offered mixed experiences with Celebrex and Humira for ankylosing spondylitis, with several warning that Celebrex and other NSAIDs caused serious stomach bleeds and ulcers even when taken with food, strongly recommending proton pump inhibitors like lansoprazole or omeprazole for stomach protection. Many members shared that Humira worked remarkably well for their AS symptoms and provided significant pain relief, though upper respiratory and sinus infections were common side effects that required monitoring and sometimes preventative treatment. A recurring theme was the difficult but necessary decision to weigh medication risks against quality of life, with members encouraging caution, self-advocacy with doctors, and the understanding that finding the right treatment often requires trial and patience.

Humira worked really well for me. Celebrex didn't really do much for me. I had relatively few side affects from the humira, with sinus infections being the thing I had to treat on several occasions. But we found a preventative regimen that helped me keep from having to stay on antibiotics all the time. Other than that, Humira did really good for me and it is also doing good for my sister.

Please be careful with the mobic @A MySpondylitisTeam Member as this is what the GI consultant blamed for my major stomach bleed out in 2014 as I had been on it for quite a lot of years and had not been given a PPI at all. He says it is turning out not to be the stomach friendly med it was intended to be. I am now not allowed it, nor any other nsaids than plain paracetamols and also my muscle relaxants were removed too never to be replaced. This has left me with a lot of arthritic pain back as well as spasms with no muscle relaxants. I was always careful to take my meds with food too. I now am left with a 3cm duodenal ulcer. x x

Personally i take morphine and wish i had started on it earlier. It took away a lot of my pain and all of my restless leg. My disease progress is advanced though. I also take humira to control flare ups. It is worth a try. I get migraines though a mn d it started with the humira so i now take sumatripton when i get those. Of course, all medications have side effects. It is very personal when weighing the risks vs the benefits. Good luck to you.

I have taken tons of different nsaids, including Celebrex....none of them did anything much for me. However, Humira was amazing! The only side affect I had to be careful with on it was upper respiratory infections, which I am prone to with asthma already. But it worked really good for me until it finally failed early this year after many years.
