I have a 9 month old Great Dane/Lab puppy who is my shadow and tries very hard to take care of me in a lot of ways. I live in a two story house with my office/bedroom/2nd kitchen upstairs and this dog doesn't leave me. He watches me as I go up and down the stairs, a lot of times staying right at my side. Sometimes he gets excited and will run to the bottom of the stairs and make it to the main hall then he realizes I'm still on the stairs and he runs back to my side and goes back down with me. I was honored to receive a retired seeing eye dog named Jake, and he was nothing short of amazing. My Spondyloarthritis was not too bad at that point so I just transformed Jake into a pet for the first time in his life. He was trained to go and get things and to lead a person.
But now I DO need a service dog due to my constant pain, poor balance and frequent falls. My 3-year-old English Mastiff comes to my rescue when I fall and tries to help me get back up. But she's so hooked to my hip that I don't think I'll be able to train her to go to get help for me. She's also shy with people she doesn't know. Service dogs are just amazing and worth their weight in gold. ā¤ļø
I would suggest that you get a professional trainer to help you train your Dane if you decide to make her your service dog. There is so much that goes into their training - they have to be bomb-proof if you plan to take her with you to stores, restaurants and anywhere else.
Good luck with your journey! Please keep us all posted on your progress. š
my dog helps me balance at times. she was not professionally trained. gets distracted easily in public, still training with that. but a great help at home
That's amazing! Kudos to you! I have a new puppy. Hadn't thought of doing that but he has grown very protective of me very quickly and follows me pretty much every step! Prayers sent for you!
I'm waiting to see the neurologist in June to see if I have MS.
Omg! That's awesome! Heart dog!
